How does Flint River Ranch differ from other pet foods?

When comparing pet foods it's important to know what makes up the bulk of the food, and how it's processed. Unless your dog or cat is a vegetarian, the bulk of your food should contain meat. After all, that's why they have those big sharp teeth! Not only should you look for the proper ingredients, you should also pay attention to how the ingredients are processed into the final product. Most large manufacturers of dog food extrude their food through molding dies and cook the food quickly using steam. This process injects air into the food and puffs it up to a uniform shape. This is also why it can take twice as much food to feed your pet...it's mostly air! Flint River Ranch oven bakes their food twice. This baking process greatly condenses the food and acts as a pre-digest of the food by changing the molecules of raw starches into easy to digest dextrines. This will cause a greater degree of food absorption and give your dog's digestive system less strain.

What ingredients should I look for on dog food labels?

Ingredients are always listed in order of quantity, the most prevalent ingredient being first. Simply stated, if meat is the first ingredient listed, then the food contains more meat than anything else. Anytime you see corn, ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal etc. listed as the first few ingredients on a bag of dog food, then that food is mostly corn. What about chicken by-products? By-products can be anything chicken! That means that if your brand of food contains chicken by-products, it can contain meat, beaks, claws, feathers, intestines and anything else that comes from a chicken. The same goes for any by-product listed in your ingredients whether its beef, fish, poultry, or meat. (A few years ago it was discovered that rendered dog meat was found in some commercial dog foods! Just insert rendered dog meat in any search engine to read for yourself!)

How much should I feed my dog?

Feeding quantities depend on the size and weight of your dog. Always look at the label to find the recommended feeding amount for your pet. You should feed your dog once a day, preferably at the same time each day. If you want to feed your dog twice a day, do so by dividing the recommended feeding amount by two or just give your dog a half portion twice a day. You should never free-range your dog by leaving 10 pounds of food out for your dog to eat whenever he wants. This leads to overweight dogs and that can be unhealthy!

How much should I feed my cat?

Cats are a little different. They like to take their time and snack throughout the day. Simply fill a small bowl of food for your cat each day and let him eat at his leisure.
